“Battling Global Issues by Promoting Biochar as a Sustainable Solution for Communities”

Our aim is to set up a social enterprise that will promote the use of Biochar wherever it might be useful. Our role is that of technology transfer, making sure we provide the necessary instructions and advice to empower communities through biochar. Our goal is for these communities to ultimately make a sustainable income for themselves and creating a positive impact on their communities, tackling the problems such as fuel poverty and poor crop yields. These practices will aid us in developing the necessary solutions to overcome these problems.  We believe that biochar creates the best and most sustainable solutions for these problems while being conscious of the environment.

 What is Biochar?

Biochar is charcoal that is made recycling agricultural waste. The waste is burnt inside a simple furnace designed to limit the oxygen supply during the burn, this way the biomass doesn’t turn into ash. Once the charcoal is made it can be used in many different ways. We have focused on two main ways, for fuel and soil amendment. The charcoal can be pressed into a briquette and then used and sold as fuel, as any regular charcoal. It can also be used as a soil amendment. Charcoal has a very high surface area which aids in providing housing for nutrients and beneficial bacteria, it also increases water retention and it can boost fertiliser effectiveness.
